And So It Goes...

The house of ill continues as I came down with the crud and the three of us have been in lockdown since Thursday night. Ruby has the croup so, as one of colleagues put it, we are celebrating a  good old fashioned Christmas with a good old fashioned illness.  Fun stuff.  The house is a disaster and we've had to miss several festive activities. That song by Madness, "Welcome to the House of Fun" keeps going through my brain in a kind of maniacal way.  But we are making the best of it. With only a few flare ups of cabin fever, we've been reading The Witches by Dahl, watching holiday movies, listening to holiday music and doing some crafty things.

I've been doing my best to keep my head up, remembering that I am lucky to have my two girls with me and even as trying as it can be, it's a blessed thing. We are getting better, we don't need to do it ALL for heavens sake! And they are just happy to get to cut up pieces of paper into teeny tiny pieces. At one point, I said I was feeling frustrated as I hunted for my hot pad for the 10th time. Lucy said, "Imma give you a hug, Mama. I love you so much!" What a little warmer of hearts that one is!

I did feel like we needed to have something to offer Santa however, so I broke out the refrigerator dough and can of frosting and made some cookies. Not up to my normal standards but we had fun I think. These will not be up for public consumption however. No matter how many times I said it, they just coughed right onto the cookies. Luckily Santa is not a germaphobe!

Sicky McSickersons

The past two days have been chock-full of sad, feverish faces and hacking bronchial coughs.  Ruby was sick all day on Sunday, vomiting (thankfully at her dad's house for once) and Lucy came down with it last night.  We just read, drew pictures, practiced letters and watched our fill of Christmas movies....trying to get those darn bugs out of the system.

Lucy was better today but Ruby awoke from a 3 hour nap this afternoon (which if you know Ruby is a good indication of how sick she is -- that kid hates napping as much as I do) with a fever and chills and her cough is awful. No way is she well enough for school tomorrow.  I am out of sick leave so I called upon her dad who it turns out has the day off tomorrow which is super convenient.  His wish was to pick her up this evening.  So he did.

Can I just say how gutted I am....how hard it is having your sick child crying that she just wants to stay home as you have to physically hand her over?  All the while your other child is crying that she wants to go to daddy's too?

Not fun.  And I don't get to see her until Thursday night.  Going to snuggle Lucy and drink a glass of wine now.

Holiday Prep

I had to go out if town for several days last week to help take care if Grandma Genie who was feeling not-so-good with chemo side effects. Thankfully she's home and feeling muscle better and on the down slope of her treatment.

It was great to be home and with my girlies and we had a fabulous weekend.
On Saturday we went and had pancakes at a Boys and Girls Club fundraiser......

Nom nom nom...

We got our tree!  We skipped into the store chanting, "Our tree our tree!  We got a beautiful tree!"

And Ruby has on, what we call in these parts, a get-up.

We had the loveliest neighbors over for dinner and all-in-all, it couldn't have been a more perfect weekend.  We are ready Christmas!!

In Which Ruby Has an Adventure...

Ruby had a bit of an adventure this week and I couldn't be more proud of her.  Normally on Thursdays, Dara picks her up from the bus stop and takes her to soccer with Kayla.  However, soccer ended last week and neither Dara or I remember to let the daycare know.  ACK!!  I arrived at her daycare to discover that when the bus dropped her off and there was no one there to meet her, she just walked the block from her stop to the daycare and walked in the door and said, "Hi!"  This, of course, gave the teachers a HEART ATTACK!  I feel quite badly about this.  Ruby however, was unfazed.  The very first day we walked to her stop, I told her that if for whatever reason someone wasn't at the stop, she should go directly to school and that's just what she did!  What a girl!

I asked her what she thought and she just said, "I just went to school. I ran for a bit just to get some exercise and then I walked and I was there."

I am so proud that she knew just what to do and did it!  Of course, we will be doing everything possible NOT to have this happen in the future but it seems that my girl is turning into a very independent, clever and capable young lady.

Halloween Fun!

Halloween this year was just plain fun.  Ruby was a vampire ballerina and Lucy was a ghost, both costumes I fashioned out of a myriad of things.  Ruby's inspiration was this book, Vampirina Ballerina, and I made her a headband from craft foam and some items from the craft store.  For Lucy, I made her a little white bonnet, cut up a pillow case and sewed a white boa onto it that I got at a thrift shop for one U.S. dollar.  Add a little make-up and they were a hit.

On Sunday, we did the traditional West Seattle trick or treat day.  All of our bestest friends were there and it was really fun.  Towards the end of the run, they all started whining for "real food" so we had to make a pit stop for some non-sugary snacks.
Here's part of the crew

And the three of us

On Halloween, the weather cooperated with us and it was neither cold nor windy nor rainy.  We got the whole neighborhood gang together plus Uncle Harlan, Auntie Dee and Auntie Kathy to visit the houses in the 'hood.  It was delightful.  At one point I asked Ruby if she was having fun.  "YES!" she replied and shouted, "BEST DAY EVER!" while running to the next house.  When we got home, we had some grown up treats (wine) while the kids tore into their candy.  Lucy, parked herself on the bean bag chair and ate her Nerds, one by one.

All in all, a successful Halloween.  Yay!

It's Fall!

The girls and I spent a delightful night at our friends the Freebairns on Saturday. The girls settled right in and fell quickly in love with Shayden and Zander, the two teenagers. Lucy also made friends with Bunda, their dog despite being terrified of him at first.

On the way home, we made an impromptu stop at the pumpkin farm, got some pumpkins and got very lost in the corn maze. We were wet muddy and tired but had a great time. Yay fall!

The Ballet

We took the girls to see Cinderella at the PNW Ballet. Beforehand they had a lovely run through of the performance, giving the girls a chance to practice some ballet moves. Ruby was so full of joy she pranced out and gave Ari a giant joyful hug.

Here they are in all of their finery.

Sick with Nanny Cat

Saffron has always been the nanny cat and she's especially attached to Lucy.  Today, Lucy is still sick and feverish and Saffy was intent on being there for naptime.

You can see Lucy's sad fever-eyes as she snuggles with her kitty

And here they are, asleep at last.

Sure hope Miss Lucy Goose is feeling better soon!

Funny girl

I spend the day with Lucy today as she was feeling a bit under the weather.  It was a nice quiet day...er..well it was a nice day. Girl did nothing but talk all day long.  A monologue that went a little like this:  "Mommy I'm not feeling well. I love dogs. That dog looks like Chewie. I throwed up on my mat. I want my Ruby to come back from kindergarten. Mommy I'm happy." Repeat.

She also wore her Harry Potter glasses for most of the day, playing with her precious babies.  She was changing the diaper and saying things like, "Just one more wipe, honey.  Mommy. will you bring me the trash can?" and then taking them for a stroll around the house.  It pretty much killed me all day.

Kindergarten Rocks!!

My fair Ruby started Kindergarten this month and it's been a wild transition for all of us but, from what I can tell, she's enjoying it quite a bit.  She is in a dual language program so she's does English for half the day and Spanish for the other half.  I took her in the first day and when it was time to leave she said, "You are leaving me here by myself?!?"  She looked a little worried but when I went to pick her up that afternoon, she had a huge smile on her face.  Auntie Kathy and I went to get her the first day and started pressing her for information.."What did you do?  Do you like your teachers?  What was your favorite part?"  When asked about her least favorite she said, "This part!"  We got the hint and shut up. Otherwise, she seems happy with it.  The first week or so, she was total Grumpy Gus upon arriving home but I think she's just been exhausted.  This has, thankfully, subsided as she's gotten used to it.

The second week was on to full day - 9:30-3:30 and her first times riding the bus home as well as to school.  Lucy and I walked her to the stop that Monday and she just got on that bus like she owned it.  Lucy cried for her sister and we both had a little weep on the way to daycare.   On Thursday, I got the call from daycare that she hadn't gotten off the bus that afternooon.  WHAT?!?!?!?!?!  So, a call into the school and 20 minutes later, Ruby was located, having got onto the wrong bus.  Woops!  I asked her if she was nervous.  "No" she said, "I just told the bus driver where my stop was."Evidently, I need not have worried!  I am so proud of that girl.

Day of fun

Suddenly recognizing that our easy breezy days of fun with our big girls were going to be gone for a while, Dara and I had a Day of Fun with our  big girls.  We went to U Village and painted some pottery and then had lunch, played in the fountain and went to the candy store.  It was a fun day though I think the ceremony was somewhat lost on the girls.  They just enjoyed being out and about.

Mermaids at the Beach

We took advantage of a free day snd beautiful HOT weather to go to our beach. Some seaweed, sand and shells made two sweet mermaids.

Ruby waded out and grabbed a grandma's hand when she started to feel unsure. She then befriended the grandkids and they all made a castle with a moat.

Now we are tired happy and covered in sand!

First Tooth!

Ruby lost her first tooth today!  It has been wiggly for a while, but today it was super loose.  She wiggled and waggled it with her toothbrush and it popped right out!  She was a little concerned about not having any teeth until I explained that it is coming out to let her grown up tooth in.
"I'm almost a grown up now!" she exclaimed.  I told her she's getting closer every day.  So, she's excited to see what the tooth fairy will bring and put it carefully in an envelope underneath her pillow.

Bike Gang

Both girls have been super excited about riding their bikes this year.  Lucy has learned to pedal (all by herself!) and Ruby is slowly but surely gaining confidence as she figures out steering and concentrating all at the same time. Go girls!

See You Soon Shanoobie

Our dear pal and favorite librarian, Shannon, moved across country this week. We are bereft but are excited at the possibility of getting to visit her in her new little East coast burg!

Our fair Lucy moved to the preschool room this month. Big girl. Now she gets to be with Ari every day!

In other news, our fair Ruby will be attending the dual language program starting in kindergarten in the fall. Hooray!!

On Our Own

When Grandma and the rest of the crew left, they took Ruby with her so Lucy and I have been kicking it on our own. It feels like a vacation just having one!  And one that naps 2 hours a day no less!  It's been fun getting more one on one time with my fair Lucy and she really just kills me every second.  Every day she asks me, "Where's my Ruby? At grandma's?"  She misses her big sis!  Ruby is having a blast though!

Visit From the Cousins

Grandma Genie and Auntie Amy and Jack and Hannah drove up for Memorial Day weekend so we all had a chance to hang out and play.  It was very fun but by the end of the day, we were exhausted after wrangling 4 kids under the age of 5.  In between, Amy and I actually had time to talk. Phew!

Our first stop was the zoo -- Jack was very interested in seeing the gorillas and we got to pet a lizard and run.  Oh yeah...they all four ran like crazy.

Lucy like the carousel for about 1 minute.  Just after this was taken she screamed, "Get off!!!"

Ruby, on the other hand, loved it. I am certain she was imagining she is Rapunzel here.
White Center Night of FUN!  Just after ice cream.

So fun -- we want those people to come back!!
